Château d'Etoges - Champagne

Built at the beginning of the 17th century by the Counts of Anglure, the Château was a staging post for French monarchs whilst travelling to their eastern dominions. Today, surrounded by a moat, gardens and fountains, and in the midst of champagne vineyards, the Château offers a superb getaway from Paris.

How to get there:

Driving: approx. 90 minutes and 120Km east of Paris, 45 Km south of Reims. By train, one hour Paris/Epernay, and then taxi for the 25Km to Etoges.

Lovely château surrounded by a water-filled moat set amongst splendid gardens in the village of Etoges.

28 rooms ranging from standard (or "classic") to superior (or "privilige"). Lift access available for rooms in the Orangery. The rooms are decorated in keeping with the history. Free WiFi access.

Things to do:

Visit the famous Champagne Houses:in Epernay (25 minutes away) : Dom Pérignon, Moet & Chandon, Mercier, De Castellane and more, and in Reims (45 minutes away): Taittinger, Veuve Cliquot, Pommery. Expect an entry charge of around 7 euros. Many of these have tours of their cellars where they explain how champagne is made, plus you get to have a glass. Or, just drive the Champagne tourist trail, or visit the Cathedral of Reims - one of the most beautiful in France, and the Gothic art masterpiece where Kings of France were crowned.

Restaurants:

Dinner each night and lunches on some days can be taken in the Orangery. Breakfast is served in the Château. Nearby in the village is a typical "pub" which serves meals.
